How to Join Online Dating Services

When you find a dating service that appeals to you (click the link for a list of top notch dating services - most are free to join), the first step is to join.  Most top dating services encourage you to join for free and try their service.

Two common types of free memberships exist:

• Free Trials:  A free dating membership trial gives you access to all their features for a limited time.  These are great because you can really see what the site has to offer, so take advantage of the trials if you see them.

• Free Basic Memberships:  A free basic membership gives you access to their basic features for as long as you want to remain a member.  Usually it is free to post a profile / personal ad, search the database for other members, and have other members contact you.  Some services will also allow you to use the chat rooms for free.  You may also be able to send members “a kiss” or “a wink”, or “flirt” with them.  “Kissing”, “Flirting” and “Winking” are quick ways to let someone know you’re interested in them.  Winking or kissing normally involves selecting a member and pressing a button to send a wink or a kiss.  The recipient will then see a message saying, “so and so just sent you a kiss”.  Flirting normally involves sending a one liner to a member of your choice.

When you join, you will be asked for following information:

• E-mail address.  Don’t use your home e-mail address. Instead sign up for a free account. Do not use your real name for your e-mail address. This is to protect your privacy. You can get a free e-mail account at www.hotmail.com.  If you join respectable dating sites, your e-mail address will be kept private.

• Password.

• Basic personal information such as sex, age and where you live (city / state or province / country / zip code or postal code).  This information is used for member searches and to add to your profile.

Some personals sites will ask you to create your personal ad when you sign up, and others will allow you to do it later.

A personal ad, also known as a member profile or personal profile, contains all your detailed information.  Some of your profile is created from multiple-choice questions, and some from free form paragraphs.  Normally you are asked things like who you’re looking for, who you are, are you looking for friendship / dating / marriage, and physical information.
